Introduction The religion section of the Dallas Morning News recently contained an article entitled, “Letting God Grow Up.”1 Rabbi Jack Bemporad, a leader in Jewish-Christian dialogue, has co-authored a new book, Stupid Ways, Smart Ways to Think about God. From reading only this article, Bemporad seems to be saying that we must forsake what we have learned about God . We do not say man is a spirit, but that he has a spirit. On the other hand, we say man is a soul. The soul seems to be related to man’s earthly life while the spirit relates to man’s heavenly life. The knowledge of God is received by man’s spirit (1 Cor. ) and interprets it for the total man.

This is why the Scripture says, "My Spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh" (Gen. ). The flesh in the Bible refers to the life and nature of the soul and body of the unregenerated man. More often it refers to the sinful nature within the body. This flesh is the common nature which man shares with other animals. Jonathan Edwards- 'The Excellency of Christ' (edited and updated for 21st century Christians by Rev. Charles R. Biggs) Revelation And one of the elders said to me, "Weep no more; behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has conquered, so that he can open the scroll and its seven seals.".

Soul, in religion and philosophy, the immaterial aspect or essence of a human being, that which confers individuality and humanity, often considered to be synonymous with the mind or the self. In theology, the soul is further defined as that part of the individual which partakes of divinity and often is considered to survive the death of the body. (Of course the human nature of Christ also includes a human body and a human soul.) That we are made up of body and soul is indicated in the creation account: “ And the Lord God formed man from the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and man became a living soul” (Genesis ).

In it Scougal defines religion as the life of God in the soul of man and then details how to experience that blessed state in one's own life.

The first time I read this book there were a few revolutionary concepts in the book that lifted me out of the stream of thought of the theological world I found myself in in my earlier years/5. The short classic The Life of God in the Soul of Man   originated as a private letter of spiritual counsel to a friend, but Scougal allowed it to be published ina year before his death.

The Life of God in the Soul of Man is, in reality, a letter of doctrine and encouragement to a friend wavering in the faith, and was never intended for publication. Scougal dwells on three points in his epistle: the nature of true religion, the excellency and advantage of true religion, and the basic elements of true religion.

The Spirit of God is the Spirit of adoption. Or to put it another way, the life of God in the soul of man creates a living union between Father and child. The nature of the Father is imparted to the child, and the old relationship of slave to slaveholder is utterly changed.

In the most explicit example from Scripture of these divisions, the Apostle Paul writes: Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you entirely; and may your spirit and soul and body be preserved complete, without blame at the coming of our.The Soul. Man not only has a living soul but he is a living soul.

The Bible says: “And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and man became a living soul” (Genesis ).

We must be careful not to confound that which is truly spiritual and that which is merely soulish or psychical.
